Interferometric Readout /FPS
The /FPS encoder system is the only ultra high resolution position sensing technique which is compatible with any of attocube’s standard environments, ranging from ultra low temperature over high magnetic field to ultra high vacuum conditions. The /FPS encoder is based on attocube’s patented fiber interferometer, providing relative displacement information with better 1 nm sensitivity/repeatability for travel ranges < 20 mm.
General Functionality
In the /FPS equipped stepper positioner, a fiber-based interferometer is fully integrated into the positioning stage. The /FPS encoder measures the position between fiber end and a reflecting surface on the moving parts of the piezo stepper. The electronic controllers required for driving an /FPS equipped stepper positioner are the ANC350 in conjunction with attocube’s laser interferometer controller AMC500/ACC200.
Optoelectronic Readout /NUQ
attocube’s most recent optoelectronic /NUQ encoder allows ultrahigh resolution closed-loop operation at both ambient and ultra
high vacuum conditions. The /NUQ sensor delivers a relative position to a reference mark with a stunning sensor resolution of 1.2 nm and a repeatability of < 10nm.
General Functionality
In the /NUQ equipped stepper positioner models, an optoelectronic measurement system is fully integrated into the positioner device. For the operation of a /NUQ equipped positioning device, an ANC350 control electronics is used. Its fully automated software and plug-and-play design make this positioning solution the ideal candidate for a variety of positioning and alignment tasks. Features like the ‘Automatic Amplitude Control’ enable to drive the positioner with a constant step size which consequently results in constant motion velocity.
Optoelectronic Readout /NUM
This encoder system allows fully automated, closed-loop positioning operation with high resolution compatible with ambient conditions, ultra high vacuum, and magnetic fields up to 7 T. It delivers a relative position to a reference with a sensor resolution of 10 nm and a repeatability of < 400 nm.

Similar to the /NUQ sensors, optional /NUM sensors are fully integrated into the piezo stepper device. The electronic controller required for driving and position readout is the ANC350. Its fully automated software and the plug-and-play design make this positioning system the ideal candidate for a variety of positioning and alignment tasks. Features like the ‘Automatic Amplitude Control’ enable to drive the positioner with a constant step size which consequently results in constant motion velocity.
Resistive Readout /RES
Specifically designed for the operation at low temperature, the resistive /RES encoder provides a readout of the absolute sample position with a resolution of approximately 200 nm and a repeatability of 1-2 μm. Apart from operation at low temperature, the /RES encoder is also compatible with ultra high vacuum and high magnetic fields.
General Functionality
In /RES equipped stepper positioner models, a resistive element working as a potentiometer is fully integrated into the positioning stage. The electronic controller required for driving this readout system is the ANC350. This controller allows to adjust the operating voltage of the sensor element in a range from 0.1 to 2 V.
